題目:The Skin microbiota, the host immunity, and the antimicrobial stewardship

摘要:

The incidence of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) was estimated around 500 episodes per 10,000 person-years in a 3-year retrospective study reported by Ray and colleagues in 2015; the incidence has also been shown to increase by more than 20% between 2001 and 2009 in the US.

Among identifiable risk factors for SSTIs, hosts’ underlying co-morbidities and asymptomatic bacterial colonzation remain as two modifiable host factors. Particularly, accumulating literature has suggested that host-commensal interactions may modulate host immune responses to pathogens, either to trigger immune-mediated skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis; or to render hosts’ tolerance of colonizing pathogens. A better understanding of these host-microbes cross-talks may provide novel insights on alternative antimicrobial approaches to reducing hosts’ risks for infections while containing the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

In this talk, we will report preliminary results of epidemiological studies on staphylococcal colonization and its relevant host characteristics, including hosts’ skin microbiome profile, and elude the implications of reducing pathogen colonization by manipulating the skin microbiota, instead of using antimicrobial agents, to prevent SSTI in both the clinical setting and in the community.
